Only 5 steps are required to get the edge device up and running in your plant. In the following article, we are going to drive you in these steps. Let’s start!
Basic safety instructions
- Before setting up or using your FieldEdge, please read the User Manual and the Security Guidelines supplied with the device.
- For more detailed information, please refer to the User Manual and the additional documentation on https://help.netilion.endress.com
- The system must be installed, connected, configured, operated and maintained according to the instructions in this Quick Start Guide and the associated manuals.
- The FieldEdge SGC500 is approved for permanent use in weather-protected, secured and access protected areas.
- The FieldEdge SGC500 is not approved for use in hazardous areas. Any connection to devices operating in hazardous areas must be made via a suitable barrier.
1. Unpacking
- FieldEdge SGC500 - AA
- Power Connector (preassembled)
- Alternative Wall Mount Kit
- Documents:
• Quick Start Guide FieldEdge (SGC500)
• User Manual (Spectra PowerBox)
• Security Guidelines
• Safety Guideline
Not included:
- 2 Ethernet cables, one for internet access (WAN), one to connect the field network (LAN).
- power supply cable 24 V DC, consumption typically 8.3 W, max 15 W.
Required: DIN Rail space - 153 mm
2. Wiring and mounting
- Ensure that the ATX switch is set to the left-hand side.
- Connect the FieldEdge (LAN 1) to the Internet via a network cable (not included).
- Connect the FieldEdge (LAN 2) to the field network with a network cable (not included).
- Connect power 24V DC.
- Check that the power LED lights are permanently green (the beeps can be ignored).
- Mount the device on a DIN Rail (not included), required space is 153 mm.
• We recommend to separate networks with LAN 1 (WAN) and LAN 2 (LAN) ports as described above. In case there is only one network to connect to the cloud and to the field, LAN 1 port must be used.
• Plant firewall settings must block unauthorized inbound calls from the internet to the field and allow unlimited access to https://*.netilion.endress.com.
https://api.netilion.endress.com and https://downloads.netilion.endress.com are used.
1 LAN 1 = WAN
2 Internet via a network cable
3 Field network
4 Firewall
3.1 Connect the Netilion Platform
- Login to your Endress+Hauser Netilion account at https://netilion.endress.com/app/id/
- Open Edge Devices in the menu navigation and search for the serial number of your FieldEdge (see serial number label on page 10).
- Your edge device should appear with a green icon, which means that it is already connected to the Netilion IIoT ecosystem.
- If this is the case, continue with chapter 4 “Connect to the field network”.
- If your FieldEdge does not appear with a green icon, wait a few minutes and refresh the edge device list view (F5).
- If the FieldEdge still does not appear with a green icon, continue within this chapter with step 3.2 "Connect the Netilion Platform manually”
3.2 Connect the Netilion Platform manually
This step is only required, if your FieldEdge does not automatically connect to
the Netilion platform (no green icon, see previous page)
1 Using an Ethernet cable, connect a computer directly to the LAN 2 port of the FieldEdge.
2 Open an internet browser.
3 In the URL line, enter 169.254.1.1 to open the FieldEdge SGC500 app. If the app does not open, see
remedies below.
4 Login with “admin” as user name and the serial number of the FieldEdge as password (see serial number
label on black name plate on the device).
5 Follow the instructions of the application.
6 If an internet connection is established (green icon),
a) disconnect the computer network cable from LAN 2 port of the FieldEdge.
b) connect the field network cable to LAN 2 port of the FieldEdge.
c) repeat Step 3.1 “Connect the Netilion Platform”.
7 If no internet connection to Netilion could be established,
a) ensure that the firewall allows unlimited access to https://*.netilion.endress.com (port 443).
https://api.netilion.endress.com and https://downloads.netilion.endress.com are used.
b) check DNS (Domain Name System) access.
Scenario 1: SGC500 Internet-access via Proxy-Server (recommended).
1a: SGC500 accesses the Proxy-Server with the Proxy-IP-Address.
The Proxy-Server is configured with the IP-Address in the SGC500 App.
No DNS configuration is needed in the SGC500 app.
1b: SGC500 accesses the Proxy-Server with the Proxy-IP-Name.
The Proxy-Server is configured with the Proxy-Name in the SGC500 App.
A DNS-Server must be configured in the SGC500 app to resolve the Proxy-Name.
Scenario 2: SGC500 can directly access https://*.netilion.endress.com without a Proxy-Server
(not recommended). No DNS-Server needed to resolve *.netilion.endress.com.
Remedies
If the “FieldEdge SGC500” app does not open, please check the TCP/IP settings on
your computer. Ensure that you have configured obtaining an IP address automatically and
to accept a private IP address automatically.
- Alternatively you can manually configure the following address: IP 169.254.1.2, subnet
mask: 255.255.0.0. In addition check that your browser does not use an HTTP Proxy to
access the IP address 169.254.1.1. If this is the case, temporarily disable the proxy. - If you still cannot access the edge device, ask your local IT administrator.
4. Connect to the field network
- Login to your Endress+Hauser Netilion account at: https://netilion.endress.com/app/id/
- Open Edge Devices in the menu navigation and search for the serial number of your FieldEdge
(see black serial number label on the device). - Open your FieldEdge details by clicking on the appropriate entry.
- Open the network interface LAN 2 details by clicking on the appropriate entry.
- Click Edit to enter the IP settings for the field network, then Save.
If you are unsure of what to enter consult your IT administrator. - Wait for a short time, then refresh (F5) the network interface details view and check that the status is active (green icon). This means that the FieldEdge applied the settings and you can continue with chapter 5 “Connect to a field gateway”.
5. Connect to a field gateway
- Login to your Endress+Hauser Netilion account at: https://netilion.endress.com/app/id/
- Open Edge Devices in the menu navigation and search for the serial number of your edge device (see black serial number label on the device).
- Open the edge device details by clicking on the appropriate entry.
- Click Create in the field gateways section to configure a new field gateway.
- Select the type and enter the IP address (and other settings) and a name of the
field gateway. Now Save your settings. - Wait for a short time, then refresh the page (F5) and check that the status changed to online (green icon). This means that the configured field gateway is connected to the edge device.
- Repeat the steps of chapter 5 for additional field gateways if needed.
When the chapters are completed, the edge device has been successfully installed
and configured. You can now use it in conjunction with Netilion Services.
